Types of career pathways for graphic design:
- Independent: you can be a freelance graphic designer and get hired for one off jobs or start your own design agency. They are responsible for every aspect of their business, meaning they must posses more than just graphic deign skills.
- Voluntary Sector: Non paid. Graphic designers would usually help out a charity and would help add to their portfolio of work.
- Employment: Employment for graphic design working under an agency. Graphic design agencies are hired by outside clients to produce creative work. Agencies usually hire several graphic designers in order to staff various projects they are contracted to do.
- Work based training: a course in graphic design to further improve your skills. (apprenticeships)
- Further education: A degree in Graphic design at university to fully train yourself for the role.
- Higher education: university
Experience in 3D design, film+TV, fine art, photography, fine art and graphic design will lead to success in the above career pathways as they are crucial in creating good designs that aren't basic. These skills can be gained from work based training, higher and further education pathways.
